Selinunte was an ancient Greek city built on the southwestern coast of Sicily; today it is the largest archaeological park in Europe. The ruins of the city are located on the territory of Castelvetrano, in the southern part of the province of Trapani.
In the archaeological site, on the acropolis, there are some temples along with secondary constructions, other temples are located on a hill not far away, while the sculptures, found during the excavation campaigns, are exhibited in the Salinas National Archaeological Museum of Palermo.
Marinella di Selinunte is the beach of Selinunte which extends over a long sandy coast in the western part of Sicily, located in a gulf between the mouth of the Selino river, near the Acropolis of Selinunte and the mouth of the Belìce river . Marinella di Selinunte is a tourist-seaside resort with pristine beaches and a clear and inviting sea. To the east of Marinella, a splendid beach stretches for 5 km which reaches the promontory of Porto Palo di Menfi.
The beaches, equipped with lido and restaurants open until late, are born in wonderful places: under the acropolis, dominated by the temple of Era, inside the unspoiled natural reserve, or near the particular tourist port.
Wonderful beaches with a crystal clear sea, surrounded by unspoiled nature, this is the Natural Reserve of the mouth of the Belìce River and the neighboring dunes. It is a protected area on the border between the city of Castelvetrano and Menfi, respectively in the territory of the province of Trapani and Agrigento.
Spread over 129 hectares, the Reserve is surrounded to the south by the Mediterranean Sea, to the north by the old railway that connected Castelvetrano to Agrigento, to the east from the Serralonga plain and to the west from the town of Marinella di Selinunte. Becomes Integral Nature Reserve in March 1984 for the conservation and reconstitution of dune formations, fauna and flora typical of sandy environments.
As the name indicates, one of the most important rivers in the province of Trapani flows, the Belìce river (from the Arabic Belich, the name of a castle); in addition to being the largest of the three rivers that bathe the territory of Selinunte, Belìce is one of the largest in all of Sicily. Once navigable, it represented for millennia one of the main communication routes between the hinterland and the coast.
The Reserve of Belìce can be easily visited by following one of the branches that branch off from Castelvetrano-Menfi and lead to the very center of the nature reserve. In the stretch of coast with very fine sands which extends between Marinella di Selinunte and Porto Palo it is possible to dive for a swim in the clean and crystalline waters of the reserve, almost always calm and characterized by shallow waters.
